I am very excited to be a member of the amazing team at The Grief and Trauma Healing Centre! I feel very fortunate to get to do this work and bear witness to clients as they grow and heal in their journeys. I am passionate about working in the field of mental wellness and trauma, but in the last year have also felt more drawn specifically to grief and loss work. My father passed away at home in November 2017 after a battle with cancer. While I had experienced loss before, I gained a new level of understanding for the emotional complexities of grief and loss, and what it is like to support someone who is (or whose family member is) undergoing cancer treatment and palliative care.
I would describe my overall philosophy and approach to therapy as strength-based, curious, and client-centered. I believe in using a compassionate and empathetic stance. Building a positive, trusting relationship together should be at the heart of our work in therapy. While I may utilize some concrete tools to help guide the process, ultimately you are the author of your life and already have so many wonderful qualities and personal resources we can discover together.
I am comfortable working with a variety of presenting concerns including stress, anxiety, low mood or depression, ADHD, trauma and PTSD, divorce, transitions, grief and loss, autism, parent-child relationship issues, attachment wounds, and domestic violence.
In my free time, I love to travel with my family. I enjoy gardening, going to book club, working out, and spending time with friends and family. I am also an avid movie and Netflix buff and love staying up-to-date on current events.
RaeLene brings significant experience to her work with clients and their families. After completing her BA with Distinction in Psychology at the U of A (Campus St. Jean) and then her Master of Counselling degree in 2011 at Athabasca University, she focused her career primarily toward child and adolescent community mental health. Following a 1600 hour residency, she has been a fully Registered Psychologist since 2013. In addition to her full time work with Alberta Health Services where she has maintained both clinical and leadership positions, she has maintained her own part-time private practice, and sees clients across the age span.
RaeLene has been using EMDR therapy in her practice for over 5 years and continues to pursue advanced training in this area. EMDR can be a very effective therapeutic approach to working through traumatic events or painful memories. In addition to that, RaeLene has experience and formal training in Emotional Freedom Techniques (level 1 and 2), Clinical Hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, mindfulness techniques, Narrative Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy.
RaeLene plans to take The Grief Recovery Method training in the near future. She strives for ongoing professional development and loves finding both formal and informal opportunities to enhance her therapeutic skillset.
