My love for psychology began when I pursued the subject as my minor, and I soon obtained a double major in both psychology and biological sciences. Psychology courses often moved me to perceive the world around me in a variety of different ways while considering multiple perspectives. Then my job as a behaviour consultant has provided me with the opportunity to help parents support their children with a disability and observe how it impacts their mental health. In this position, I am regularly met with the unexpected trust of parents who want to confide in me and turn to me for emotional support during challenging times. These experiences with my clients are invaluable, and they have further propelled me to seriously pursue counselling psychology.

Hello! My name is Simarjit, and I provide counselling and assessment in English, Hindi, and Punjabi. I am passionate about actively listening to one’s life story through multi-factorial and nonjudgmental lenses as many factors (e.g., cultural, biological, social, psychological) influence one’s experiences and worldviews. I practiced a client-centered approach in my previous experience while supporting and coaching families in navigating complex emotional regulation issues and life stressors associated with having a child with a disability (e.g., Autism, anxiety, OCD and ADHD).
I apply a client-centred approach by combining treatment methods and strategies from solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy. I believe in building a positive therapeutic relationship by incorporating empathy, respect, compassion, and trust, which creates a safe space for you to share your vulnerable experiences. I also believe that the client is the expert of self and knows more about themselves than someone else, thus I want to collaboratively work with you to search your meaning and strengths through the therapeutic process.
While being raised in Canada, I have and continue to experience the challenges in navigating my life experiences while being exposed to two different cultures. Therefore, my unique perspective will allow me to understand and incorporate cultural differences to help motivate and empower others to take charge of their lives and mental health.
Currently, I also work as a behaviour consultant and use a family-centered approach to support the core challenges and unique learning styles of children with autism. I provide consultation to these children in the home, in the community and schools. This experience provided me with various opportunities, including working with families of various cultural backgrounds, language barriers and family dynamics.
