What is Hope and Why it Matters?

The meaning of hope can be described as a positive and optimistic experience in one’s life. Sometimes, hope supports us and will carry us through the darkest days. Hope can be the light through a dark tunnel and can offer comfort, peace, and optimism through challenging situations. Grief, trauma, and feelings of immense sadness can sometimes overpower a person’s life, however hope can give us meaning and reassurance for the future. Hope is something that always matters and is important when navigating challenges. 

Hope matters for many reasons. Hope may give us permission to embrace change rather than being consumed by our intense emotional pain. When people experience hope, people may be inspired to pursue their goals and aspirations. It can also be a powerful tool to help navigate the hard times that exist in our lives. Though it can be difficult, hope is always there for us. It implies that there is a possibility of a better future, and can also help us manage stress, anxiety, grief, and trauma.

Some ways to remain hopeful could include:

  • Appreciating the setbacks - Any type of setback can be an opportunity for growth, and hope can be strengthened when you persist despite the challenges. 

  • Keep an open mind - Keeping an open mind can help you stay hopeful.

  • Allow yourself to have bad days - It is important to not be hard on yourself, and in order to remain hopeful, to know that it is okay to have bad days or difficult times.
